Attitude in Real Estate

I was waiting for a thought-provoking subject to come along to post my innaugural blog post here on REW. As my wife was doing yoga this morning, it gave me a chance to meditate and reflect on my hard work over the past week. One thing that really came through for me was how well I kept a positive attitude through the week.

If your week is like mine, it's full of ups and downs - good days and bad. It's relatively easy to maintain a positive attitude when everything is going well, you're on top of your work and things are flowing smoothly. It's when things get tough and you face real adversity that a positive attitude becomes difficult to hold on to. However, it's at these times that a positive attitude becomes your greatest asset.

I get a lot of business through leads from my website - www.illinoislandandhomes.com - and also through some direct mail efforts to a few farm areas. As many of you know that work internet leads, your first chance to make an impression is when you call that lead and thank them for visiting your site. As a musician, I'm a firm believer in the ability of others to pick up on emotion - particularly through tone of voice. Whenever I'm on the phone, I'm ultra-aware of how I'm speaking to the other person. I try and keep things positive and up-beat.

It's interesting calling and talking with other agents and listening to the tone of voice - you can almost pick out the grumpy ones or the ones that may be having a bad day just by the way they sound on the phone. You can also pick up on the way a conversation is going by listening to inflection, volume, pacing and a host of other factors. It makes me wonder: if I was a potential buyer or seller calling that agent and that's what I'm picking up on, would I really want to work with that agent?

So, the next time you pick up the phone and call a cold or warm lead, try to think about what type of agent you want to be and try to communicate that through your voice. If you've had a bad day or something didn't go your way, take a few minutes, have a sip of coffee, take a deep breath and try to turn things positive.
