Please read this whole article. If you live up north it will make you rethink where you live.
Now this is a topic I enjoy. As many of you know I moved down from the Philly suburbs about 4 years ago. I had made the choice that I wanted to live in a healthier area where the weather was warm. I really never liked the east coast of FL and so when a friend told me about Naples I flew down. I bought a rental/vacation property on my first trip. I was HOOKED! A little over a year later I gave up a 7 year job at the PHLX, Philadelphia Stock Exchange, as a floor trader. It was a big move. Particularly, because we just had our first kid (it will be 4 in May) and my wife was no longer working - let me rephrase that to avoid hate mail from you stay at home Moms ... no longer had an income.
So, I get the question all the time: "Why did you move?" The Weather. I am not exaggerating . I HATE the cold - HATE IT. Sure...when I am up north in October I think it is refreshing to have a cool morning. But come on - at least 6 months of the year are brown and brisk.
I get people saying off the wall things to me like "I would miss going skiing" or "I like to wear sweaters". Most people that ski go three times a year at most. So, you think it is worth scraping the windshield 50 times a year in return from being an hour's drive to a slope? They don't trap you in the state of FL if you live here. You can travel.
Let me put the proof in front of you. I lived in an area about 30 miles north of Philly called Lansdale. It is by no means the coldest place in the country. Probably half of the people reading this live in a cooler climate.

Philadelphia Climate
Naples Climate
There are a few points I really want to highlight that you may find surprising:
- The highest recorded temperature in Naples was 99 degrees - I am sure that it reaches 100 degrees where you live many years.
- January in Naples is warmer than Philly in May - While both cities have January as the coldest month January's average temperature is 36* warmer.
- The warmest month in Naples, July, is only 4* warmer than July in Philly - So, the hottest month is only 4* warmer and the coolest month is 36* warmer...seems like a fair trade off to me.
- Naples has 47 minutes more daylight - While the sun rises at almost identical times, 6:39AM in Naples vs 6:37AM in Philly, the sun sets 49 minutes later in Naples, 5:42 vs 4:53. I hated when I left work in Philadelphia and it was already DARK...and this goes on for months!
Now the climate is just one reason I have highlighted but it was a big one for me. Here are some other surprising facts:
- State residents can send their kids to any one of 11 universities for less than $14,000 - PAID IN FULL FOR 4 YEARS! This includes University of Florida and Florida State. Parents can even prepay now to prevent against education inflation. Check out the link Prepaid College - Click Here
- NO State Income Tax - Did you know it is over 10% in CA?
- Some of the best beaches in the country - In fact, the Travel Channel named Naples as 'The Best All-Around Beach' for 2005. Read The Story
- Population of Collier County is expected to nearly DOUBLE by 2030 -Click Here For Story. What sort of effect will that have on the price of local real estate?
