Smyrna Georgia is reveling in their success as a revitalized and thriving place to live, work and play. Situated about 10 miles northwest of metro-Atlanta and nearby to Interstates 75, 20 and 285, Smyrna has earned a reputation as the model for smart planning, implementation and growth.

Settlement in the Smyrna area began around 1832 by pioneers, and by the late 1830s received vacationers from all over Georgia because of a religious habitation called Smyrna Camp Ground.  After the Western and Atlantic Railroad was completed in 1842, the area began to develop.  Smyrna was known by several names up until 1872, and when it was incorporated as Smyrna. In the 1980s, the Cobb County city's distinction and characteristics began to slip away as metro-Atlanta exploded in size.  A strategic plan was put in place to regain Smyrna's individuality and ensure its evolution into a place with a sense of community that people could call home.

The strategic plan that Smyrna city leaders were determined to successfully execute, was focused around the concept that people needed a place they could come together and have a common meeting ground. They envisioned a well-defined downtown where people could live, work and play. This concept and dream for the future came to fruition with the amount of success and vigor they had hoped for, and is currently known as the Smyrna "Village Green." The $23 million re-development which covers 15 acres and took 15 years to build, is a walkable, mixed-use town center with a police station, city hall, community center, arboretum, library, shops, office space, restaurants and 16 townhomes priced between $200,000 and $1 million. At the heart of Village Green is Market Village, where you will find the private residences and specialty stores.

The Village Green is surrounded by and includes 33 acres of parks and green space, located within one mile of downtown. A total of 304 acres of parks and green space can be found within the 15 square miles of Smyrna, and the start of the popular Silver Comet Trail borders Smyrna. There are also public pools, tennis courts, playgrounds and a linear park with walking trail for residents and visitors to enjoy. Smyrna is a host to diverse local recreational and cultural events like the Annual Smyrna Beer Fest, Fall Jonquil Festival, Christmas Tree lighting and Radio Disney's "Noon Year’s Eve." The Market Village often has open-air concerts, festivals and events.

A strong commercial base has also been developed and cultivated as part of the revitalizing efforts. IBM is Smyrna's largest employer, and is followed by companies such as The Home Depot, Glock and The Weather Channel who are headquartered close to the edge of Smyrna.

Smyrna is home to more than 47,000 residents and because of the wildly successful community re-development, the area continues to attract residential and commercial development. The diverse selection of real estate offers very affordable housing opportunities, with the average home price starting around $178K.

Served by the Cobb County School System, Smyrna has eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one charter school (Imagine International Academy).

As a past recipient of the Urban Land Institute Award of Excellence for their downtown re-development, Smyrna has also achieved other distinctions for their sustainable redevelopment efforts. The vibrant, prosperous future of both the residential and commercial components of Smyrna are reflected in the continuous efforts to grow and cultivate the community. Smyrna is truly the textbook definition of a community where you can live, work and play.
