PROPERTY TAX RELIEF STILL BEING DISCUSSED IN TALLAHASSEE

photo Weiss Clawson

Property tax relief for residents of Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach and throughout Florida has disappeared from the front pages of our newspapers.  That could mean that lawmakers are seriously working out of the spotlight on proposals to lower our property tax bills.

When we last visited this issue, Republicans had advanced a proposal that would roll property tax bills back to 2001 levels, then provide increases based on economic factors such as the Consumer Price Index.

Democrats are now suggesting a broader approach that includes capping local government spending, relief for people renting and possibly business property tax relief. Another Democratic proposal would substitute an increase in sales taxes for the school tax component of property…

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF GETTING ATTENTION IN TALLAHASSEE

photo Weiss Clawson

Homeowners in Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach and all communities throughout Florida are watching early actions in Tallahassee on property tax relief.

The House Government Efficiency and Accountability Council last week approved a measure that experts expect could cut property taxes in Palm Beach County as much as 30 - 40 percent and cut taxes statewide by about 20 per cent.  The legislation would roll property tax rates back to the 2001 level, then readjust for the current year by adding an inflation factor.

There is much more debate and work to be done on this and other property tax reduction ideas before any relief surfaces in tax bills.  And county governments throughout the state are lobbying state lawmakers to ensure their revenue is not…

READY FOR PROPERTY TAX RELIEF

photo Weiss Clawson

We are anxiously awaiting and actively watching efforts in the Florida State Legislature to provide property tax relief for people in Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach and throughout the state.

With the legislature convening yesterday (March 6) there has been much rhetoric in Tallahassee about the need to change property tax calculations so that bills are more equitable.  Today two neighbors in identical homes are likely paying very different tax bills.

This disparity has negatively impact real estate in Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, and throughout the state.  People who have moved among communities, people who want to downsize or buy bigger homes, are often stymied by the tax burden.  Yes, a smaller home can bring a larger tax bill!

Most…

The Honda Classic brought a wonderful field of professional golfers for this four day event on the Championship Course of PGA National.  The communitiy with its nearly 5000 homes were spotlighted throughout television coverage of the event.

Homes range from small condos, less than 1000 square feet of air conditioned living space, in the $100,000's up to large single family homes in the exclusive Island section, priced at more than $1 million.  Many sections of the community have…

REAL ESTATE ACTIVITY INCREASING, BUT SALES STILL DECLINING

photo Weiss Clawson

January 2007 real estate sales statistics for Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach and all of Palm Beach County continue to show a decline, but the numbers appear to be moderating.

Home resales declined 15% in January 2007 compared with January 2006, but it was substandially less then the 27 percent state wide decrease in home sales.

Median home prices also continued to decline, 1 per cent down in January 2007 compared with January 2006.  That places the median home price in Palm Beach County at $388,000, down from $393,700 just a year ago.  But the numbers are still better than the 4 percent nationwide decline in home prices.

Despite these dismal numbers, we are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of people shopping for new homes.  We have had…
