Default An update about the seriousness of spam

There are some who have not become aware of the recent drastic uptick in the amount of spam and its potential for drastic increases in the future but they are even reporting it on network news.

Well I received a link for a very informative article about the situation that explains the seriousness of the threat and the causes very clearly. It is at http://clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3624656

    The author explains how
"Botnets are growing in size and sophistication, enabling spammers to send more e-mail than could have been conceived of only a few years ago. This virtually unlimited capacity to send spam allows image spam and pump-and-dump stock spam to grow at an enormous rate. The ability to send tens, even hundreds, of message variants to the same recipient is very successful at getting through filters. The effect on ISPs and other e-mail access providers is substantial, requiring ever-growing resources just to avoid drowning in the flood."

The only choice in such an event (and that is what I have been going through) is to clamp down severely with the email filters (which is not a very business friendly option as we have discussed).

In the middle of these events, though, is something that anyone with a mailing list should be aware of. "In particular, ISPs are increasingly aggressive about bounce rates." If you send emails to "old customers" you will likely be affected by this.

    The author summarizes with
"Unless and until ISPs realize they've tightened requirements so far that some classes of legitimate e-mail simply can't be delivered within the parameters they've set, I see no way to resolve this issue."

So, to tie this in with the pay per click topic, Boxbe, as I mentioned might be the answer to this growing spam problem. But beyond that, Boxbe let's you charge "quasi" spammers to receive email. It would let your emails through to your "old customers" for a price whereas without it the ISP filters are actually forcing marketers to incresase the level of emails (spam) just to reduce being blocked. It is a very interesting article that shows how your business is likely to be affected.
