I like longer word counts as well. I have been going through my site and trying to get all the pages up to about 500 or so words. Maybe it's silly, but I wanted to add some real meat to the area descriptions and man do I get tired of "parroting" the same stuff over and over to clients. It helps when I've put the content out there and the clients have read it and ask second questions which are often quit different than tell me about X subdivision.

How long does it take a good writer to research and write a good 500 word article on average??

I dont think there is an optimimum length that should be followed. Whatever you feel comfortable with and what your target audience likes should be what you do.
