I just want to share my own experienced. This tips may be basic but I think it's important.
If you found your site has lower ranking in Google, please take a look at who you linked to.
I had bad experienced 5 days ago by put links from my real estate directory site to my new real estate site. Just 2 days after, ranking down from 3 to 4 but the bad thing is, I checked some DC's my site down to #5 or #6 so I just investigate and I found the cause. All of my site hosted in the same ip and same class C ip. I took the link off and move my real estate directory site to new host. 2 days after, my ranking is back to #3 again. Here is my conclusion
1. You must not link to your new site from old well-established site if they're all same ip, even different dedicated IP or even they are all same theme.
**different dedicated IP doesn't mean different class C IP.
2. If your old site penalized, your new sites that you linked too will be thrown to sandboxed/filtered and it will not ranking even in top 800-900. Harder to get them back. Your pages still be indexed but not ranking well. You have to add more contents and do more backlinks more than ever.
good luck with your site.

good luck with your site.
