Not all links are equal- thought i'd share an experiment

I decided to run a test to determine where I should focus my link building efforts. As part of the test I had 1 incoming link pointed to a domain that came from a major Canadian university that runs on a .ca domain.

The page had maybe 10 outgoing links and ran a consistent PR5. After the first update my site hit PR5 with only one inbound link.

Focus your link building efforts on quality and you'll be rewarded. Also check how many outgoing links the page has since this will effect the outbound link juice.

Authority sites are HUGE in the eyes of google. Obviously the goal is to become one but until you do focus your IBL's (inbound links) on these key sites.

You can spot them in the wilderness as they usually rank #1 and have the sub links below.

This is part of the reason contextual linking was implemented at REW. It just makes sense to try and make the links as high quality as possible.

Are University sites always willing to give up a free link? did you have to pay? was it reciprocal?

Try going out to a bar or a club sometime. That will most definitely change. Nothing like having them toss their purse at you, and telling you to stay and watch it.

No the link was one way and it was arranged through an exchange of sorts. it is difficult to get one ways from universities since they have no interest in you or your site. But with so many stakeholders in the group it is easy enough to find one person who controls content that can be easily swayed....
