Yes, it is right that there are many article directory who just give the permission to add link in the about Author section but you can say that there are around 40% directory who requires this and in other directories you can also put the links in the body of your article. Most of the article directories allow about maximum 3 links to add in an article.

Based on what I experienced in submitting articles to the article directories. Some of the sites like the buzzle.com and the helium.com didn't allow you to put a links on the body of the article, to make it safe that your articles will have links is to have it in the author bio.

Actually there are so many sites which allow link in the body of article; but you should be very keen to draft the article with the required keywords. It is good to have a link at the author resource so that the chance to decline would be low.

Regarding submitting an article to 100 sites, I've done it before. Over time you will end up with a handful of indexed articles, maybe 10 - 20 or so. I think your time is better spent submitting to maybe 5 - 10 of the top article directories. That's just my opinion though.
I have better results submitting one unique article to one of the quality directories like EZA, GoArticles, and ArticleBase. I haven't had much lick with the mass article submissions. Over time the articles are filtered out as duplicate content.
