Default How I determine the worth of a domain name I want to sell?

I own a domain name not relating to real estate that I don't really need anymore and may be worth more to me if I sell it. How do I determine how much it is worth?

i would search on google, there are places that will tell you what it is worth. But remember it is only work what a buyer is willing to pay.

You can get it appraised for 50-100 bucks or just put it up on one of the auction sites and see if anyone bites. Most domains are not even worth appraising as they are not worth the cost of the appraisal. While other domains are very valuable and people don't realize it and let them expire.

If you post it here we can give you an idea if it's worth the cost of an appraisal. Maybe I'll even buy it if it's good :-)

Depending on the domain and your motivation to unload it, there are a few different routes. Most of mine that I'm looking to unload leisurely I list for offer/buy now on tdnam.com which gives you a free 90-day listing. There are additional features you can purchase for exposure, and also get a domain appraisal.

sedo.com is another option along with afternic.com, or posting on the forums of namepros.com.

Another option (and a route I've taken a couple times) if the domain is industry/business specific, is to directly contact some companies that might be interested offering to sell the domain. I"m going through that right now for a pet-related domain I ended up with.

Unless it's a very short domain or a single dictionary word, generally what was mentioned above holds true...it's just a matter of what someone is willing to pay. I have some that are quality phrases and relatively short, even a couple one-worders, but there just isn't the right market for them.

But one thing to remember, most people ridiculously overestimate what a domain is worth. I see the stupidest ones listed for thousands of dollars, which is rarity for even good domains. Only time I high-price mine, other than not really caring if I sell it, is if I've had multiple appraisals and seen similar ones sell high.

    anyone wanna buy coastalrenter.com?

    Excellent advise Lane...

Ultimately it's similar to real estate; a domain name is worth what the market will pay fot it. I apologize if any of this is considered spam but I'm only trying to help. Domain Name Journal posts lists of recently sold domain names and the price they sold for. You may be able to find some "comparables" or at least get an idea of the market. http://www.dnjournal.com/domainsales.htm I've also compiled an extensive list of domain name resources that may help http://internet.rockbrothers.com/domain-names.html

    It is shopfordenim.com

I thought that a large designer denim retailer might want to buy it. Someplace like ShopBop or RevolveClothing. I think its pretty good, but then I am also in the designer denim business, my 3rd job! Lol.

Hey Lianne, How long ago did you purchase the domain, If it was recent then I wouldn't expect much for it, Think of this way if no one bought it when it was available to buy for $10 then why would someone pay good money now unless it was an established site with some decent traffic. I could be wrong though so don't quote on me that

    Liane

It depends on a few different factors. Have you had a site running on this domain generating any traffic? Also the other tld's for this domain are still available ( https://secure.registerapi.com/dds2/...&y=173&=submit ) ,which means that the domain name isnt much in demand. To be honest I don't think you'll make more than 50 bucks for it but you never know. You can use free tools like leapfish.com or http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=84113 to get it appraised, although I dont put much faith in the automated appraisals but the digitalpoint forums have a section for appraisals provided by members (most of the members are domain traders). Also if you do a bit of research, there are not a lot of search queries for "shop for denim". I hope this helps.
