Default Too many internal links on a page?

Hi guys! Since there are so many experts here, I had a quick question.

Is it possible to have too many internal links on a page on your site?

We are redesigning the index page of our site and we've changed our menu from javascript to CSS-- so now, the bots should see those links. However, that's going to add quite a bit more links to the page. Should we worry about that negatively effecting our ranking in any way?

I'm probably being paranoid, but I don't want to mess us up in the serps. I'd appreciate any thoughts...

The home page should not be so cluttered that the visitor gets confused, nor so empty that they can't at least point themselves in the property direction to find what they are looking for by clicking. If you keep that in mind and listen to your mind -- you shouldn't end up with a page so bloated that you negatively affect your search results.

    Terry-

Gotcha. It looks good--- way better than before, and actually has less links on page except that now, the menu is "readable". In terms of design, it's an improvement.

Matt- Don't know when we are going to change it yet-- hopefully soon! Most likely, it won't be until at least next week. This is our down season, so we can afford a short fall-- KNOCK ON WOOD!

Doesn't Google recommend limiting links to less than 100 per page?

He's talking about his home page and his history shows a clean design. It never occurred to me that he would get anywhere close to 100 links.

The only page anyone should come close to that many links would be on a links or directory page, and then I'm more worried about page size in bytes rather than number of links.

Our original page (as it is when you go to our site) has 40+ links at the bottom because the menu was coded in javascript, which we were told google had a hard time "seeing". We'll now have the same number of on page links (though they are WAAAAYYY better designed on the new page) and will have a readable CSS menu.

We'll be under 100, but with all menus at the top, we'll be in the high 80s. Thoughts?

I thought G's idea of excessive linking was 100+ outgoing links (destinations outside of your domain). I haven't heard of excessive interior linking, but I guess it's possible.

    Aubrey:

Because of the drop-down nature of your menu, I don't see a problem. The major problem people have with navigation is, "does it make sense" or "is it confusing." If you have easy navigation, spiders can also follow your navigation, and your page is less than 100KB as an absolute max (which it is), I just wouldn't worry.

I read somewhere that a google engineer basically said 100 links on a page is the max unless its a very important page. Hope that helps.
