My server went down for a little bit while G was crawling my site and that's how a few of my URLs were unreachable.. but they were cleared up in a day or two the next time it was spidered.

Google Webmaster tools will tell you when the last crawl was performed. Check your host server logs for the same day and you'll probably discover that your pages were, like mkrotchie says, offline and inaccessible to Google at the time.

Dangerous practice, that. I'd switch providers if I were you, if it occurs frequently.

Make sure you add a site map. Might help the robots find them.
