Verify Google Webmaster Tools

I'm sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find it. How do we verify our Google Webmaster Tools. I saw how you could upload a file but it ended in .html and I know when we create a page it ends in .php and then there was the option of the meta tag but in REW's backend where exactly should I paste this code in the home page?

You are still able to upload the file from google with a php.extension it will work.

I just placed mine in the root folder it was verified no problem.

Stupid question of the day:

After you verify, do you leave the verification - or is it ok to take it out?
(I would assume the latter.)

Hi Ryan,

For REW Clients using the CMS - you can post the verify code in the template support forum and one of our staff will add it to your template file. I assumed that the verify code must stay after it's verified.

You'll need to get one of our staff to add the file - or the meta tag to your site.

So now I have Webmaster tools. If I already have a sitemap on my site using the REW snippet, should I still "Add a sitemap to tell us more about your site" in the Google Webmaster tool?
