Most Important "To Do List"??

When you launced or made your websites live what were the most important things you did to achieve rankings or to make the site generally aware to the masses? What was the most effective?

SEO? Directory submissions? Etc...

JMO, but I think it starts before you launch...I think first you look at whom it is that you want to connect with and how. You then pick out the proper KWs and phrases that they will be likely using to find you.

Then you decide what unique content you are going to provide that will get and keep them until a sale is made (and even after).

I had never heard of Craiglist before I started using the forum most of the posts in the Dubai section on there look like they are ad`s for the States but I will give it a go and see if I get any results.

1. Make sure the site is spiderable.
2. Add a sitemap.
3. Tweak page titles, metatags, descriptions
4. SEO friendly urls.
5. Good unique content.
6. Backlinks from good relevant sites
7. No black hat SEO stuff.
8. Add lots of good pics and make text easy to read with bullets and lists.
9. Important keywords in H1 and H2.
10. Well placed contact forms or other ways to convert the surfer to a client.

Not necessarily in that order but all are pretty important I think.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the most important factor to ranking is back links. I keep on seeing sites in my area that really aren't on-topic, but have great backlinks that get ranked for great search terms.

Am I wrong on this?
