I would say facebook is the most popular and a lot of businesses are beginning to use them. LinkedIn is also very popular. I would look at that, as well. If you google some good sites they will come up with descriptions of each. I think it is best to get on as many as you can.

It would appear to me that Google+ is almost a must for anyone wanting to be noticed by Google. It must be nice to own the largest search engine and also start your own social media network , that requires you create a Google account. I'd say most people, here, are right; in that failbook, twitter and linked in are the 3 best ones. The thing, though, is: if you want to get most out of, any, of them, you need to use them in the ways they are best. A social media network is made for social interaction; so, going on there to be a sleazy business man, to ANY degree - even giving a hint of that vibe - is going to be a complete waste of time (and the more VISIBLE those efforts are, the worse the consequences). Go and just be a friend, to those people, and give them tips because you WANT to, because you love people and you want them to succeed. Put yourself in their shoes and you'll have a lot of FUN long before you see monetary success.

There's another aspect, to facebook marketing, though, and that is: facebook ads. Notice that this does not interfere, or have anything to do with, the actual social interaction on facebook. Facebook are amazing because you can be so very targeted in your efforts; so, if you want the exact demographic of a certain type of home, in a certain type of place -- BOOM -- you can create an ad that shows for only those people (it costs some money; but hasn't the amount of time - I assume - you've wasted trying to make money costed money..?).

Don't forget Pinterest - 3rd most popular social networking site behind Facebook & Twitter. With millions of visitors and the benefit of dofollow links - it's a winner.

This is a good article that explains where you get the most link juice on the page:
