Default Google Sitelinks in webmaster tools

Am I retarded or did I just miss this?

In Google webmaster tools I was clicking around and I realized that there is now a "Sitelinks" tab in the "Links" section of the webmaster tools.

I click it and it shows me which pages on REW are shown as sitelinks, and allows me to block them if I don't like what I see (Like I'm gunna block em lol)

Sitelinks are additional links Google sometimes generates from site contents in order to help users navigate your site. Google generates these sitelinks periodically from your site's contents.
Because we generate sitelinks dynamically, this list can change from time to time.
That's cool! Funny how you can miss something right under your nose - is this new, or did I in fact just miss it?

It's been there a while. Yea blocking them would be kind of dumb. I was looking at that the other day wondering what it would take for me to move up on that. You need a minimum of 4 to work and it's up to google to make this happen. I have seen some realtor sites with this before and wondered how they did it.

So in your opinion what would it take for a realtor website to gain this benefit.

From what I have seen you have to be number 1 and still only some show up this way.

For example the Tonnesen's website in Las Vegas used to have the 4 links below their main site, although they don't anymore.

For REW it's easy, but the agent websites I don't see it very often.

It's one of the new Google Webmaster features.

I thought the same thing as you -- right! Like I'd block Google from giving me this!!

But I suppose that it would technically reduce your number of positions in the top serps, for many websites (you know: where you have spots 2 and 3).

The new Google Webmaster tools give great info.

You know, there's so much 'stuff' there now it's a full time job trying to keep up. I like the fact they keep adding tools to the arsenal.

True enough... But I don't need logic I need tools and understanding in english

Heck, I haven't even figured out all the analytics stuff yet.

Hey, that's an idea... Who has a link to what all the analytics stuff means (that can be read by non technicals)?

I saw a thread about this a few weeks ago on another forum. People were wondering if there would be any way to suggest a new sitelink in place of one you block. It doesn't appear that way at this time.

I might digress here, but I did check out this new tool (I didn't know it existed either) and it tells me that my front page has over 634 links pointing to it but when I check the backlinks through the toolbar it gives me none. What does this mean? I could never understand these things and I am so happy to have found this useful forum

Of course Google won't disclose their algorityms, but I have a theory that sitelinks are generated based on a combination of internal links and Google analytics. For example, if you have a main menu on every page of your site, you have a consistent pattern on internal links to a select few pages. If your Google Analytics reprot to google that these pages are often clicked on, then I'm pretty sure Google will create sitelinks for your site. This assumes of course that you are #1.

One thing I noticed when looking at zero sitelinks for me was a big increase in the number of internal and external links. Anyone else seeing this?

My guess was always internal linking structure and inbound links from other websites (Throw in the trust / authority algo's for good measure) - I have never subscribed to Google using their GA to effect their SERPS - but hey, that is just me (I know others disagree)

Anyone have an example of a website that does not use GA but also has sitelinks?
