What EXACTLY constitutes a backlink?

My site has been up for about a year and a half now and as far as Google placement goes, it has come a long way. It not only shows up on page one for multiple keywords, but sometimes, my website and blogs combined make up 4 out of the first 10 results.

However when it comes to PageRank, something keeps bugging me and I cannot seem to figure it out. I blog constantly... I maintain two main blogs of my own, I post here, on Active Rain etc etc. religiously linking back to relevant pages in my website. (I guess this would explain the high rank). But when it comes to backlinks, none of the blog posts show up as backlinks when I do a search via the Google Toolbar. Why doesn't Google consider these as backlinks? In other words, what does constitute a Google Backlink? Pls Help!

Thanks for the link to the past thread. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one that has an issue with this. One more dumb question: How and where does one install the Greasemonkey script?

Sign up to google webmaster tools its free. The link: check in google only shows a fraction of the links.

It's better to keep your own blog or signup for REW blog for better visibility. Use Webmaster Tools or linkdomain: operator in yahoo search.
