The only one I usually reccomend is Yahoo. Sends a decent amount of traffic for the annual 299 and gives a couple relevent backlinks to get a site started.
I haven't really noticed any difference in the results pages either way
I submit to directories if you justify the expense, is it topical? Does it have PR?, Are they direct links? How much are they?
All things considered I would pay $10-$20 for a Pr 5 backlink if it was topical, thats just me though.
Think about it they know the higher their Pr the more they can charge so get in early and you get a better deal.
Shoot I can remember when Yahoo was Free!
Starting LEC 7 soon but it won't be called LEC 7 - LEC 2012 coming soon!
<sigh>Oh, the good 'ol days</sigh>
Watch out for Yahoo. You won't be able to get the title and description that you want to increase your click thru. Your title will be just your name and company. They edited mine quite a bit.
The problem with that is that the title and description they give you for your directory listing is the title and description that then shows up in the results from a regular Yahoo search. Instead of pulling your title from your own web site page and then pulling the description from the words around the search terms, they just dish out your directory title and description no matter what phrase is searched for.
For example, for a search for "Atlanta MLS" in Yahoo will show this:
Timothy Maitski and Sandy Fisher - RE/MAX Greater Atlanta![]()
offers access to Atlanta MLS home search, as well as information about home buying and selling..
Instead of what I want which I think will pull more clicks:
Metro Atlanta homes for sale, Search Atlanta MLS, No Registration ...
Search Atlanta MLS for metro Atlanta area homes for sale, no hassle, no registrations, both Atlanta, GA FMLS and Georgia MLS databases, addresses of homes ...
For this reason I am trying to get out of the Yahoo Directory. Hopefully they'll purge the directory information and go back to serving up what I want.
Or you could rewrite a compromise and request an edit, they dont like intentionally altered Titles that are overtly keyword loaded, but if you can mention your company name and what makes you attractive within their limits then give it a shot.
Starting LEC 7 soon but it won't be called LEC 7 - LEC 2012 coming soon!
Yes, and that goes for non-directory links as well. Todys pr0's and pr2's are tomorrow's pr5s and pr7's!Think about it they know the higher their Pr the more they can charge so get in early and you get a better deal.

What directories do others pay to be in besides yahoos $299 deal

Quite a few agents pay for the REALS directories (if you can call them that) I can't tell you what kind of traffic response they get.

All things being equal, I don't mind paying 10-40 dollars for a life long link to a site, and I tend to be cheap with advertising dollars. There are tiers of directories and some are considered the big guys (DMOZ and Yahoo are the biggest). Look at goguides, joeant, gimpsy, wowdirectory, skaffe, and a few others like that. I would consider them essential.
And or the record, I don't buy yahoo directory insertions. 300 bucks a year for a directory link is BS.
