Default Is it worth having link exchange on site?

I've been hearing some different views on link exchange. Is it worth having a link exchange page that directly links to your site or homepage. Can this help or hurt. I recently took down all my state link pages and have completely ignored any inquires requesting a reciprocal link exchange from other realtor websites.

Linking actually helps quite a bit; you just have to do it the right way. You should read Morgan's post on creating a diverse linking portfolio. There's a lot of good information there.

While one way link are still good, I question is really about resipical links. Are they still good after what has happened over the last few months.

Check out this #1 site on this search http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...te&btnG=Search

Been #1 for a long time. The whole site is keyword stuffed, recip, directories etc. Tell me the sites that got penalized earlier in the year wasn't a hand edit?? The algo certainly isn't picking up recips etc.

I don't have state pages but alot of others certainly are doing very well with them.

I spend a lot of time looking at various real estate sites on the web. It's clear that reciprocals still work for Google. They've never said to my knowledge that recips are bad, they just don't like 'excessive' (their word) reciprocals in order to gain PR or rankings. In fact, I've seen many real estate sites using the state page link scheme even today that rank well. I ran across one #1 result with 'sitelinks' last week that showed a reciprocal link page as a sitelink.

I'm in the middle of redesigning our website and redoing our link strategy, so here is my 2 cents.

I think a link exchange page is a good idea, but don't pass any of your PageRank or 'link juice' to the page by using the 'no follow' link attribute. Don't do this to the actual links on the link exchange page as that is bad to do to your link partners and will probably result in lost links.

My point is, include the link in your navigation so your link partners can see it, so they don't think the link page is hidden, but you won't be passing any of your link juice to it, and can share that among other important pages in your site you are trying to rank.

You should do this for all links you want your page visitors to see to add depth to your site without wasting your PageRank distribution on less important pages.

If anybody doesn't understand what I mean, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to make it clear.

Just to let you know, I'm actually the SEO for the agent in the footer. He is my only client as I'm under contract now to exclusively re-design and do SEO for his site. Just explaining why my name is different than the one in the footer.

That being said, if anyone has any SEO questions feel free to ask me.
