    Default web site age ?

I understand one of the variables in considering a ranking that SE's use is age fo the site. My original site, www.gcamp.com is 301 redirected to my new REW site www.propertyinsantacruz.com. When speaking with somone it is sometimes easier, as speech and cell or other phone reception make brevity much better, to say gcamp.com instead of propertyinsantacruz.com.

When I use the wayback, I find my first site having been introduced about 2000 and my REW site about 2007. I thought there was a way to carry forward that time link to benefit the current site.

Anyone have any insight on that or a link to a prior thread regardin this?

    thanks

It's not the age of the site, in and of itself, that matters. It's the authority of the site gained over time by way of backlinks.

301-redirecting a domain with little to no authority isn't going to do much of anything, no matter how old the domain is.

Thanks CK, back then just having a website was cutting edge.Little did I know links would have any value or that something called google was brewing. Now back to links and content.

A proper 301 redirect will forward all of the old site's variables to the new site, though it can take a few weeks to months to show in the search engine results (based on the strength of the site).

Google considers the age of the site, but they likely get the age from whois data rather than archive.org, so when the URL was first registered. However, it's also important that the site have the same theme in the past as it does in the present for the maximum benefit.

Age does have an effect - although it is minimal.

If you have two sites (theortically) - same content, backlinks etc. the only difference being one was registered a month ago - the other 5 years ago, the oldest domain would have the best ranking in the search engines... thats why people like to buy aged domains in some webmaster circles...
