Read through other posts in this section. They are discussed at length. Active Rain, linked in, facebook, myspace. People are able to use all of these in different ways to generate leads.
Well, the top social networking sites would be things like Facebook, MySpace and Linked In. If you are looking for social networks that are real-estate oriented, then you would probably be better off with social networks like Activerain and Linked In. Granted, it is definitely possible to generate leads through MySpace and Facebook, it just may be easier for you to do it in other sites that are more geared towards business/real estate networking.
Are you looking for niche social networks? Or just general social networking sites?
Squidoo is another good one that will give you a pretty good backlink.

I'll just add in some of the big bookmarking sites...Digg, Reddit, Del.ico.us
First it was Friendster, then My Space used to be the Darling of the Day but now even though it has 212 Million Members, its popularity is starting to wane. Tom Anderson did well to sell it for $580 Million to News Corp.
Lets not forget Mat and Chad (Pay Pal guys) who sold You Tube for $1.65 Billion, it has a place in marketing just not sure the best way to use this tool.
Facebook, is exapanding more than any other sight and with 75% Less members than My Space it has about the same amount of traffic each day.
It was recently assigned a value of $15 Billion Dollars, and Mark being the young guy he is, has no plans to sell it to date - But I suspect it may change.
The only thing i do not like about Face Book is it is still mostly High School and College age people, just staying connected to girl and boyfriends. Exactly what Mark had in mind when he dreamed up Facebook.
From me spending many hours on Facebook, I would estimate only 5% of it is business people, and out of that only 1% or less are Real Estate Investors. I don't see those percentages really changing a lot in the future.
LinkedIn, hit the tipping point last year (and with the owner being on 60 Minutes helped) and they went from 9 Million to 18 Million members in a short amount of time. The thing is with LinkedIn is most of the members are corporate types and not to many entreprenuers on the site from my time on the site. If you work in corporate america this may be your site.
There is a new Social and Business network (not Yuwie Ugh) that is still in Beta that I have been watching with great interest. From what I know it has been built from the ground up for Entreprenuers, and from what I have heard is under going some major changes to make is much easier to use. Expect to be done maybe in 30 days. When this one hits, it will hit Big. You should hear more about this one on the internet in the next few months.
These are just some of my observations from my experience on these sites.
Places like Yuwie have good intentions, but attract spammers. I can't stand network marketing sites like that. If someone refers me to a place like that, I no longer respect their opinions and no longer ask them to refer me to anything.
It's not a site you will find real business people at.

Its kindof a loaded question. I agree somewhat with the realestateguy in his analysis of the main network directories. I think that they all have a place in your marketing campaigns...you probably havent figured that out just yet. It will be how you use these free avenues for your marketing and how they all intermix with each other. I have been developing, what I call "Multi-nodal" marketing where I am trying to tie all of these together. I am still working things out but it is all begining to make sense. Sorry, thats the engineer in me coming out!
