    Default Registrations/Unique Visitors

Let's get some meat on the table...

By no means do I think it's necessary to divulge traffic stats, but, how about a baseline to reference to see whether or not we are set up properly to optimize the number of registrations/unique visitor.

I'll post mine in the morning after the first full day of having my new registration and details pages set up.

what's the realistic optimal number? It seems to me that if you receive 100 unique visitors, you should get 10 registrations. There are of course a few extenuating circumstances such as the methods by which people get to your site.

Ex: If you come up first for "city housing market", you might be driving traffic that really isn't looking for homes so it would negatively influence numbers, but for this exercise, I think a good baseline would be helpful and we could all take a hard look and see where we can improve.

Great topic Ryan - I have heard numbers from rediculously low .1% all the way up to unbelievable 20% -

IMHO I think 5% would be a good number to shoot for all things considered

What do others think? 5% 1% 10% what "should" we be shooting for?

I'd like to "shoot" for 15%, but, I want to be able to consistently obtain 10%.

So out of the 100 unique visitors, how many are repeat versus first time visitors. I think the percentages will be all over the board. Especially since some are forcing registration to view details, some after they have seen 2 details etc. and some only if they want to save favorites/saved searches.

I think somewhere between 5% and 10% is very realistic. I average about 45 unqiue visitors a day and about 3 leads per day, which is about 7%.

I would say I have similar stats to rvolk. Then out of 10 leads i get 3 are likely bad.

I think this is the point of the process

Let's "assume" they are all the same kinds of visitor (Big assumption I know) but generated via natural search / PPC (very similar)

There are those using absolute forced registration, there are those using none at all - If we still to task on this one, then we can move onto the next logical thread (Which I am actually going to start tonight) and that is how many "leads" turn into "customers" and then after that how many "customers" end up "buying or selling"

It's a complicated equation that's for sure and it takes a large data set over a long time - but that is one thing many of us have (A lot of time in, and a lot of data)

How about a different spin on it by considering bounce rate:
    • Bounce rate of 30% of less, how about minimum 10% is realistic, increasing as bounce rate decreases
    • Bounce rate over 30%, 5-8% seems like a realistic goal
I agree with Ryan that consistently getting 10% monthy is a realistic goal.

My ten highest landing pages (9 really as my blog is #2), all of my bounce rates are between 17% and 28% with the exception of my main search page which is 32%.

    Tracking from Jan 1 - Jan 23
    75% new visitors
    25% repeat
    Bounce rate: 31%
    Average daily registrations: 15
    Registration lead %: 6.55*

*I have a landing page after visitors register, so I only track true registration leads out of all the leads, sort of like a "check-out" page. You have to be careful if you are tracking the idx/register page as a goal in analytics, because you may have people that land on this page and leave without registering and are counted as a goal which they are not.
