Default 2nd Phone Line or Online Fax Service?

Does anyone have any recommendations on either getting a 2nd phone line for faxes or using an online service? I currently have a regular land line which doesn't have long distance. I use my phone for any long distance calls I make.

I was thinking about getting road runner digital phone service which has free long distance starting at 40 dollars. I think getting an additional fax line would be 10 dollars.

On-line fax is probably the better way to go but you will still need a scanner to scan your documents with.

I've got a mid level HP scanner/fax/copier/printer and still fax the old fashioned way when I'm not at the office.

I second the e-fax thinking. You can access it from anywhere, immediately save it to disk, and easily email copies. Plus it saves paper and copies are a whole lot cleaner looking.

I use myfax. It's cool, but as previously mentioned, you still need to scan the documents into pdfs. If you have a high-speed scanning system, it's slick. If not, it's actually faster to fax the old fashioned way. Accessibility is great, though.

E-fax is the way to go. You will always have that permanent email trail and easy access to all your fax in your Inbox.

I think the online version would be easier as well but I don't have one of those load scanners. I have to put in one page at a time. I also have one of those mid level HS office jets all in one.

In my area, many lenders and brokers, require that documents be legible. Faxing the same document a few times, it loses it's quality, so scanning it and then efaxing it is a much better solution.

Do a search for 'metro high speed' faxing service. I've heard some good things about them and you receive your faxes in your email inbox. Pretty slick.

I would weigh out the cost/benefit to getting a high speed scanner and how much an extra phone line would cost. Personally I think an on line faxing service over time would be the better bet, you have a record of everything and the quality is better.

pet peeve of mine is folks who send my confidential or sensitive info via e-faxes. Yeah they support password protection, but who really uses it? no one i know. I have a land line for things that are confidential and need to be sent to me or my office and I won't fax to e-faxes for sensitive items.
