IDX Map Page Thumbnails - HUGE!

My site is still in Dev but wanted to pass this along and figured that the group as a whole might have some thoughts on this.

On the IDX map search, the thumbnails that are loaded next to the map and on mouse-over are full size pictures shrunk down to thumbnail size for display. This means that for 100 results displayed, it is downloading approx 50 properties x 50k or nearly 2.5MB of data!

While it would require some additional storage space, it would make a huge difference on load times:

A 640 x 480 file resized to 20% of original (128 x 90) goes from 52k to 11k.

On the detail pages the full size should be loaded because the mouseover function makes it instantly refresh the big picture when the full size is reloaded, but on the map search page it would make a huge difference in speed.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Sorry Aaron ... I somehow missed this thread...

I don't think that it'll speed up the map load times. The images are loaded in after the map is loaded up .... It would definitely speed up the load times for the images in the left bar of the map.

Are they planning on extending the width of that page to loose to quick search and featured listing on the left there? Map Looks kinds squished in there.

Anyways ... I'll take a look into this for you. I seem to recall Northstar MLS having thumbnails on their FTP server ( I could be wrong ) ... I'll check into how much storage space we'll need for the thumbs. Northstar is one of the largest MLS boards we have.

I was thinking about expanding the map... will have to mock it up in Paint Shop Pro and see what it looks like...

I would think that it would help contain bandwidth costs & server load too.
