Almost 2 years ago, I entered into a contract with a guy who was building a website that was a city go-to for everything type site. On the advice of a friend who is on another one of this guys site and does VERY well with SEO, I signed on with this site even though it was new.
It didn't appear to me that after a few months, much was being added to the site to improve the links and google juice and I discontinued with the site. The site owner left my profile up under the TOP TEN agents or whatever the section was. I did well with GOOGLE during that time with a Point2Agent template site that I have reworked.
Here is the archive of how I was linked back then:

So here it is and about a month ago, my google rankings really took a plunge and this website owner emails me to let me know that he took my site down and he has reworked the site etc, and was I interested in signing up again. He attributes my fall in google to removal from the site (he noticed it, not me).
So I noticed that I still have a link back on the site, just not the SAME linkback to my site and I emailed and asked, "is there a difference in the way I was linked and how I AM linked still" and he said this was one of the SEO strategies he uses and that he doesn't give that information out. Ok, I can't argue with success, but is this really a GREAT working linkback or is it some sort of voodoo!?
Here is the current link on the site:

What am I missing here....? Please help as I don't want to sign another contract to appear on the site unless I know this is truly a big factor in my sudden fall in google!
