Search Engine 101

Allright, I'm about to ask the dumbest question ever on this forum I've done tons of websites, however most have been for clients who didn't want to pay a dime for promotion, had someone else that took care of the promotion, or only cared about traffic that heard about them on TV, business cards or flyers, so I haven't had much exposure to what you all refer to as the ABC's of designing your site for search engines. Here's my dumb question. I hear everyone talking about the ABC's, but where do I find this list of ABCs Pretty dumb huh. What I'm learning from you guys is that search engine placement is an artform and I want learn the ins and outs of how to do it.

Also go to www.webmasterworld.com . They have forums on just about every aspect of the web. I like to keep up with the Google News forum there.

Do a search for search engine optimization to find information. It's not quite a science and there are many varying opinions on what to do and not do. Read as much as possible and start testing things out and see what works.

Early this year a lot of stuff seemed to be changing with Google so make sure you don't read stuff that might be out of date. The relative weighting of various criteria seem to change from time to time. Last year it seemed like key word density was fairly important but now it seems to not be that important.
