For Cecil, I think LinkWrangler would do what he wants, though it doesn't find java links or links that would work within a frame (usually).
As for finding the "path" from the home page to the links page, if you can't find it -- then in my opinion, the link is fairly worthless. My requirement regarding reciprocal links is that it has to be a highly visible link that can be found by web visitors.
But I am "old school" and still think that way. My reason for creating a huge link network was what I called "bottom up" marketing. I started realestateabc.com with no money, and to get visitors -- I needed links. Back then, search engines were essentially useless.
Of course, I had also read that Scientific American article that discussed what was going on at Stanford so I knew something like Google was on the way, and that was a "bonus" when it happened.
