    Default Any page rank benefit from redirecting old site to new?

    I had an old website that had a decent PR and several inbound links. However, I shut down that site about a year ago and created a new site. I still own the domain for the old side and I'm having it redirected to the new one. I did this primarily so that people who I've worked with in the past can still find me but I'm wondering if the new site will get any PR benefit from the old site.

    I'm sure this has already been addressed a dozen times in here but could someone please refresh my memory?

    Thanks

    The best re-direct benefit would be to 301 it to me.

    I have been told that it will pass pr.

    I've also read that the best thing to do is 301 redirect to the new site and google recently did a best practices on moving your site article:

    I don't think so , your old site is still getting all the juice passed to it. check where the backlinks are going to.

    301's will pass the juice directly to a new site. However, some SEO's have started buying old, dead domains, and 301'ing them as a link building practice. Because of this, it's been speculated that Google records dead domains, and negates the benefit of 301's from sites that have been down for an extended period.

    If I were you, I would still 301 the appropriate pages from your old site to the new - it won't take a lot of time, and there's a chance that it will help you. If you see a jump in the SERPs ~2 weeks after you set up the 301's, let me know - I would be very interested.

    I know Google will knock down a sites page ranking and search result ranking if it sees that the domain name changed owners, but I think if you just create a new site with that domain name and you are still the registered owner you should get some PR benefit.

    So Google looks at who owns the site? What if you have private registration?

    I recently moved some of my sites to different IP addresses, which I assume is not how Google determines ownership. I moved them to get more juice out of the links, and I'd be bummed if the move were interpreted by Google as a change in ownership.

    @BoywithK9-

    While I am not going to say what Google does or does not do, they are a registrar as well, so theoretically private registration is no barrier to them IMO.

    No, people move sites to different IP's all the time. This is different than changing ownership.

    Jay, I'd be interested in seeing some of those as well...a change in ownership can happen via a merger or acquisition as well...do you know that this happens everytime or just have seen it happen.

    Curious on that one...I have a friend who just bought a company that would be interested in that info.

    I moved them to a hosting environment where each site can have a unique IP.
