I think optimizing for yahoo would be the same thing as optimizing for google and bing, actually most people tell me yahoo is easier to optimize for than google and in my experience that is very true. Don't aim for yahoo though, not too many people use it nowadays. Go for google.

Yeah I agree with ChasRE. Just grow Google and Yahoo and Bing will come. Weird that those two Yahoo and Bing like my sites and giving me double listings. Cool!

I also agree, just work for Google and it will not be so different for Yahoo. I actually rank better in Yahoo than Google without doing anything to achieve it.

Great post. Always wondered as to the differences. Only thing I can say for sure is that yahoo loves keyword match url's.

What I don't quite understand is that although Bing powers Yahoo search, the results are different.

My site actually ranks better on Yahoo and and Bing for many keywords than it does on Google.

Strangely enough, some of my strongest keywords on Google actually rank lower on Yahoo and Bing.

I am not actually certain what the differences are in their algorithms. I just keep pushing out content and looking for a diverse group of new links and let the everything else kind of figure itself out.

Seems to be working well enough at this point.

My traffic from both Bing and Yahoo has been increasing steadily, though its still a very long way behind Google. But while I have been struggling to get over Penguin, my traffic overall from other (than Google) sources has gone up. As a result I am finding myself looking more often at Yahoo and Bing now, but the truth is I don't really know what to do differently for them as my SERPs are already very good.

    Fast forward 3 years...

There are three factors I've observed that Bing is MUCH more sensitive to than Google:

1.) On page links (not to be confused with site-wide links)
    2.) Subheadings H1, H1, H3, etc.
3.) Keyword anchor text of inner links (pointing to that page)

First, for IDX sites specifically (like REW sites), having a consistent number of listings (and links) on the page seems to help. Regardless, I've noticed wild fluctuations with rankings in Bing, depending on the number of listings on the page, and the content contained within those listing snippets. While Google seems to love the continuously fresh content generated by updated/new listings, Bing goes wild with rankings. I've worked with many sites that maintain top rankings in Google for a year or more for particular pages... all the while Bing is going nuts.

Secondly is the headings - particularly beyond the main H1 heading. Bing responds to these more so than Google - in fact, Bing very often uses the H1 instead for the main heading in the SERPS. This means that the content of all headings is important... and it's another reason why it's a good idea to NOT use the same words for the H1 as the page TITLE, to allow for keyword variations. This is true in Google as well.

Third... Bing seems to reward keyword anchor text with site inner links more so than Google does. Of course, overdoing this can potentially cause "issues" with Google.

Lastly, Bing doesn't treat canonicals in the same fashion. In fact, they've published statements saying that they're often not a good "trust" signal because of overuse, or improper use. http://nickroshon.com/seo/google-bin...implementation So, this may also be a reason for some of the differences, considering that many of us have A LOT of pages w/ canonical tags.

In any event, I personally stopped trying to rank in Bing/Yahoo since 2009. While Bing has picked-up in popularity, it's just not worth tanking our rankings in Google while trying to woo Bing to in our favor.

If anyone else has identified the reasons for the differences, by all means... please advise.
