I've wondered the same thing, but it comes into play with even large companies. You just have to chase the slanderers and get your stuff off the net, much as other companies do with copyright infringement. I would think they're just free traffic, but obviously not when you're not getting credit.

If google does not penalize you for bad links how do they know how to give you credit for a good link?

There is a difference between a penality and a site not passing SEO juice. A penality is when you do something against Googles policies and they knock down your position in the rankings.

Some site Google has decided are not following thier policies. So they say that links from these site don't count. An example would be for pay link sites. Links from these site don't effect you SERP either up or down.

I just set up these alerts for many different keywrods today and didn't put the quotations in.......I opened my email and must have had 100 alerts in there!
