    Default duties of a contractor

Is the contractor responsible for minor work such as painting, laying out carpeting, tiles, etc..?

that all depends on the what is put forth in the bid. Some contractors include it, some charge extra, and some leave it up to you (Which can sometimes be beneficial as you get to choose our own colors etc)

thnaks for the info. But i thought that the developer chooses the colors and the contractor actually implements the idea rather than chooses it him/herself.

The best way to ensure you get what you want is to write up specifications that outline exactly what you want done...including what colors to use, timeframe for completion, etc...then send the spec to 3 bidders so you get prices from vendors that are apples to apples. Make sure they reference your spec sheet in their bid.
