    Default Domains and 301 redirects

Hello everyone. I have over a 100 relevant domains in my area. They are real estate specific. I understand a 301 won't help my SEO but will a bunch of 301 redirects hurt my search engine rankings? Thanks, Todd.

No, won't help and won't hurt (I'm reading that you'll be redirecting the 100 domains to the established site).

I just don't know why you'd bother unless you think there will be a bunch of type in's for those domains. I do understand the concept of redirecting a memorable domain to an established one for marketing it but.... 100?

Todd - I have been re-directing all of my unused domain names to sites of mine for years now. Some of them I've owned for several years and they point directly at a page within one of my sites that correlates directly with the name of the domain name.

Some of these domain names I turn into actual sites and the site never goes into G's sandbox at all. For example...I have owned Bellingham Homes dot com for ten years and it has always pointed at one real estate site or another over that time frame. About a month ago I developed a site for that domain name and it has been rocketing to the top ever since. There are other factors and reasons for it's immediate success...but it has also benefited tremendously with how long it has been around and how long I own it into the future.

I have definitely parred back on the number of domains I own...but if I have owned one for 4-5 years or more...Id hang on to it and do something with it down the road. In the mean time keep on 301 redirecting the domain...especially if you can point it at a page that works pretty good with the domain name.

Even though Bellingham Homes dot com was always a 301 redirect for the past ten years, I have always told clients to just go to that domain name. I've always used it on my name ryders for my signs as well. clients don't know the difference between a real site and a 301 redirect, especially as fast as pages come up today.

Another example is with a community page where South hill homes dot com points at the south hill section of the first site in my signature below. If I'm working with a client on the south hill I tell them to go to that page for information and property searches. Actually, now that I think about it...all of my unused domain names point at targeted pages on one site or another. Good luck Todd.

Hey Jerry. Thanks a TON for the information. I have been using snapnames, namejet, and pool to scoop up these domain names for a few years. I own some of the best domains on coastal South Carolina. I plan to get my brokers license and develop several high end sites. I will use a couple the sites to do referrals. I really think I'm on to something. Any time I tell the story of what I have done to another Realtor, they get this glassy look in their eyes, and say "that is a GREAT idea". I sure hope so. Thanks again for the advise. Talk to you soon, Todd.

Uber, I actually own over a 100 but they are not one area specific. For example, I own BraysIslandrealestate.com,, Kiawahislandproperties.com, and coosawisland.com. These are different areas and I would forward them to the appropriate page such as my kiawah island page, bray's island page, and coosaw island page. What do you think?

Uber here, but I actually prefer Obie... I'm sure it won't make any difference and equally as sure won't cost you anything, other than the renewal fee, to find out.
