    Default Hosting Options

    Dear REW Rep,

I am just wondering what web hosting options REW offers. Can you offer people the option to have their own dedicated server or is it all shared hosting? What is the cost for what you do offer? I am a current client considering moving my site back to REW for hosting.

    Thanks for your assistance!

Hi Shay -- while you were a client in the past, you aren't technically one now and the Work Orders Forum isn't the right place for this request. Feel free to get in touch with me via PM, e-mail or tel at the office.

    Shay,
Technically REW is capable / willing to offer "dedicated" hosting, but it will not give anything more than you get with a regular customer account (you still won't get FTP or SSH access as our code is proprietary and we do not allow access to it) - also, our boxes are not your run of the mill hosting boxes - your absolute minimum box would run you well over $1000 per month (at cost) + the labor required to maintain it at $100 USD per hour.

So yes, REW can offer dedicated hosting if you REALLY wanted us to, but it has not special privilleges, is very costly and the boxes remain REW property (are under the REW account) why is it that you think you need a dedicated server?

    Morgan,

Yeah, I don't think I could quite afford $1000 a month for one of the dedicated servers. I'm sure it would be a nice one though. Ryland actually responded today with pricing for your standard hosting and it seemed real reasonable. My problem is that I need FTP access because I often make updates to my site. I don't make updates to my custom IDX search very often and of course I use REW for that anyways, but I do make lots of other changes and updates to other pages. Not having FTP access would be very difficult for me. I just feel like I'm stuck here with no good option because I want to hire REW to help implement the new changes with the data feeds, but it sounds like I'd have to put my site on a server with no FTP access to do so. I just hate trusting anyone but REW with anything pertaining the custom IDX search you created. I think REW is the best company out there for custom IDX searches, and there are a lot of people who would screw it up I'm sure. If you have any solution for me, please just let me know.

    Thanks,
    Shay

I am sorry Shay, I do not have a solution for you because there is no option that gives you what you want (namely ftp access) yet protects my (REW's) intellectual property - it wouldn't matter if you paid $10,000 a month for hosting, I still would not allow my code to be compromised - I am sorry, we simply can't help you.
