I tried doing that with a test account and it removed the user altogether. I made sure that user belonged to two separate groups before I did it (so that, in theory, they would still be there in the other group) but it did not work.

I just did this without deleting the lead. Here's what I did:
1. Search for the lead
2. Click their name to go to the details page
3. Click the Edit link next to their name
4. Uncheck the group I want to remove them from
5. Click the Edit Lead button to save my edits

My problem was I didn't know the Edit key was there or that it did anything. I thought that was there by virtue of the fact that I was already in Edit mode!
