Smile Those little image tag thingy's

This question will probably seem really basic to the most of you on here, but what the heck I'm new, I'm allowed to ask dumb questions.

I asked someone to take a look at the new website that I'm building, and amongst other suggestions, I was told that I needed to add Alt tags to my images. Now I know what they are ... or at least what they do. They make the make text appear when you hold your mouse over an image ....is that right, am I talking about the right thing here?

Anyway my question is how do I make those little text thingy's pop up over the images on my website?

When you've all finished rolling around on the floor lauhing at me, maybe someone could take the time to explain it to me step by step.

    <img src="bad.gif" alt="bad" title="this is bad, really bad">

ALT attribute shows the replacement tag when your image is missing, or the user turn off image

TITLE attribute gives you the little pop-up tool tip

This is in IE, other browser may do it differently.

You should use ALT give a meaningful text when image is missing

You can use TITLE attribute more creatively, such as, include keywords in the description.

    beachgal,

you may want to spend a little time over at www.w3.org and use their HTML validator at the very least. Creating clean and correct HTML code is always a good idea. The ALT element of your image tags are part of the HTML spec so you will want to use them for this reason if no other. (alt=""). But, as home point eluded to, using alt and title tags are a good way to let people and bots know what the content of the page is without having image viewing turned on in their browsers.

Also remember the alt and title attributes (Not technically tags) are used for browser software for the visually impaired, thus if they can't see an image or link clearly they can mouse over and have it read alound to them.

Im trying to put alt tags on a few images on my REW site. So im going into my CMS and doing it like this :;<img height="117" alt="" src="http://www.oaklandhomespecialist.com/images/prusign.jpg" alt="Oakland Realtor-Oakland MLS-Oakland Homes">width="82" border="0" /></p>

But it's not working correctly, what am I doing wrong?

Nevermind, I figured it out. I needed to leave the ">" out at then end.

Hamid - in the string above, you have 2 Alt tags:

    <img height="117" alt="" src="http://www.oaklandhomespecialist.com/images/prusign.jpg" alt="Oakland Realtor-Oakland MLS-Oakland Homes">width="82" border="0" />

You should remove the one that shows as alt=""

You might also consider adding a Title tag title="Enter title of image here ...."

    Thanks for the help,

Yea, I saw the other tag when I looked closer.

As for the title tag, where is this supposed to go? I just tried to put before and after the alt tag and it didnt work right for me.

Ahh I see, I just tried it again and it worked. So the title tag replaces the alt tag text when you hover over the image? I see, thanks a lot for bringing that to my attention, hadnt even thought about it!
