Default Ranking high for the same keyword in Google and Yahoo!

Traditionally most people have optimized their sites around the ever changing algos of the big "G". Those that rank well for a particular keyword in Google typically don't rank well for it in Yahoo and vice versa. Has anyone been successful at ranking well (top 3-4) for the same keyword in both Google and Yahoo, and if so what is the keyword string. If you care to elaborate on how you did it.....

    Matt

I wish I could say yes, but I'd be lying...
I am a Tempe Real Estate agent, and I have been specializing in Tempe Foreclosures for several years now. I am also a market specialist in Chandler Homes for Sale.

I have been able to do so for several different keywords. I primarily work in Humble Texas right now and I have a site that ranks top three for several terms in both search engine. My http://humblehomesforsale.com site ranks in the top three on yahoo, bing and google for humble homes for sale humble homes, humble subdivisions, subdivisions humble, and subdivisions in humble. In addition to backlinks I have produced themed content and very unique specific content that has the addition of media. Add to this I do not over use my keywords.

I was just discussing this in the Yahoo forum... I think that having a Keyword Rich Domain is very highly favored by Yahoo, as you (jamesww) have in this example. The trouble is most of us can't just go and change our domains to make Yahoo happy.

As you know, SEO has 2 very different extremes (white/black) and a whole lot of gray in the middle. I am wondering what methodology people are using (should they care to share), or what success they have had in accomplishing this task. Thats all...

Good examples... clearly a site can rank well for both search engines. I also think that there are still biases to be aware of... for example, the 'east Tennessee real estate' search has the site at #1 in Google and #5 in Yahoo, with the 2 of the 4 sites above it in Yahoo using the keywords "east tennessee" in the domain, and a third site being Yahoo's own real estate site.

And again in the example for "custom IDX", google has the site at #1 in Google and Yahoo has the same site at #4 & #5 with two of the three sites above it at containing "idx" in the domain name.

IMHO, Yahoo still places an extremely high value on keywords in the domain name, all other things being equal. And thus in order to surpass the rankings of keyword-rich domains with decent optimization, you will have to do an incredibly good job of utilizing other SEO factors (on-page optimization, link popularity).
