Greg, If I were there longer then 2 days I would take you up on the dive.

I haven't been diving since we moved to Florida LOL! Darn I miss Ca. diving.

2k+dives, Instructor and Jennifer is a DM with 1k+ dives.

Man, you guys have gills. My friends from here moved to Fort Meyers Beach ( also agents) and dive a ton back there because of the warm water. The life and terrain are quite a bit different with the different waters so I thought, why not give it a try. Last cold water dive was Galapagos. Cold and lots of current. One to put on your list though; I think it was a Peter Hughes, so top notch. I'll look forward to meeting you two up there then. Best

You are correct. However, the "SIT" - Surface Interval Time, is still being debated.

The Minimum recommended time is 12 hours. However, that is for a single dive less then 60 feet. The next minimum time is 18 hours for multiple dives on the same day.

For many years the minimum has been 24 hours, which I continue to use as my personal minimum.

Since there is no hard evidence and tests have only been under rigid, controlled circumstances (18-21 year old in shape divers), I tend to lean towards safety when it comes to Decompression sickness or the "Bends".

The issue is not coming off a plane and diving, it is going from diving, where at depth your body gains nitrogen in the blood, and then flying where the concerns are. I am coming in on Tuesday and was hoping to dive on Wednesday before class.
Safety is always a prime concern, and while I am not a svelte warm water Florida diver, have some added protection for the cold waters of the west coast. It will be a thick suit, but cold water diving is really pretty and different. It is all a zen and great if you can swing it.

I would be very interested in doing some diving (or fishing), I am a Florida wimp and would probably need a dry suit or a really thick wet suit, gloves, hood, etc. (Whats the water temp - ours 87 degrees right now)

Have you researched any dive shops online?
What type of marine life or dive sites are off Nanaimo?
I have would love to check out some kelp forests.

My plans are to fly into Seattle on Tues. take the ferry to Nanaimao on Wed. I was thinking of Saturday instead of Wednesday but I am flexible in my schedule.

I have been a DM for 15 yrs, regarding flying, Jessie & you are both correct. There is no issue with getting off a plane and then diving. One should wait 12 - 24 hours after diving before going to altitude. However, there are lots of mitigating factors, such as the number dives, bottom time, depth, alcohol consumption, age, condition, etc. - Also, the altitude and length of flight should be considered.

I will research some dive shops...Anyone interested in a fishing charter? Possibly Saturday or Sunday?

I am open, but think we class on Saturday. I'd like to get in 2 dives if possible. I have dove kelp and being a Californian see lots of redwood trees. It reminds me of walking among them and looking up at the filtered light. Definitely beautiful and worth doing.

I am coming in Tuesday afternoon. I have looked a bit online and there seem to be boat and in a case or two shore dives. I'd prefer boat dives. I imagine the water is probably 50-60's, not balmy, but with a good wetsuit manageable for the time. I read about some place that does drift diving, which would be cool. I'd done that down by Cuba.

See what suits your fancy. As I get closer to the time I'll make my commitments. You can take a ferry from Seattle, a float plane or puddle jumper plane or drive to make the journey .If you go to Victoria, I think it is about a 2 hour trip if you drive up from there. We did that and it was fine. The float plane was really pretty, but was luggage limited.

Adam, I am doing a wreck dive on Wednesday. I'll update you on it. I think it is called Sunshine something. I'll be there tomorrow morning, assuming my luggage makes it here from Air Canada. They sure had a poor showing today on my trips. Would not use them again.
