I had a thought of including new listings in my area on the main page of http://dev86.rewtemplates.com/. currently I have it set at 5 days.

My thought was that some of the content would be constantly changing, and that would be good. I should have probably checked here first.

I'm not big on writing and was hoping that the property descriptions would suffice for content.

The only way to really know if something will work is to test. The idea sounds fine to keep adding fresh content.

Hire an article writer or buy an article pack and release one article per week.

That's an interesting point in that articles can be bookmarked and articles help you hit the long tail search.
