Default Has Any One Made Use Of This Wordpress Video Plugin

    Hello everyone,

I want to do alot more self hosted video. I have done some on test sites and plugins I have used have worked poorly or conflicted with other add ons. I came across this new self hosted plugin that WordPress is selling on WordPress.com and it can be used with a self hosted blog. The plugin is called VideoPress and I am wondering if anyone has made use of it and I would like to hear peoples feelings on it. If you have not heard of it or this sounds like something you would want to add the link is below.

I have never used it personally, but I have a few friends that swear by it. Most blogs today are designed with coding to handle basic video. I use a lot of Youtube vids on some of my sites and I don’t even use a plugin…just hard coded into the blog post or page.

I don't know...I am sure its great just like everything else the wordpress crew comes up with but I don't see the point if you can host it with you tube and just embed it on your site. If you are running your your wordpress installation you would have to upload on wordpress.com and embed it on your own installation either way so I don't see a HUGE advantage over youtube

I have a couple of clients and friends who have recently installed it and like it...like most plugins though, since they are open source, the key is making sure that they are supported over time.

Self hosted blogs depend on good hosting if you are adding LOTS of videos to one specific blog...something to keep in mind IMO

Thanks Eric! I am really disappointed as to the lack of a really good open source plugin for WordPress to host everything on your own site. I really want to have the videos on my server and have my urls associated with the embed code. I plan to roll out some videos that maybe found as useful to others and would like to have the link juice from the embed code. If I am mistaking here please let me know.

Something to consider is that YouTube is a source of traffic as well as a place to host video...

Yeah the quality leaves something to be desired, but in many cases agents in our office have pulled significant traffic that way.

No you are not mistaken about the link juice (depending how it is set up) IMO. I have seen people do almost as well at building authority by simply putting their vid on YT and creating more avid readers from folks who had not noticed their blog before.

Two ways to skin the same cat IMO. I am more of a build relationships and let the authority follow kind of guy...but a truly solid onboard video plugin would be nice as well ;-)

    Best

    One interesting note:

Comscore reported that YouTube passed Yahoo in terms of number of searches in December of last year. They moved into number two behind the big G! (grin) That had to be a bad day in Yville...grin

I have not used it, but the previous designer did. i think the best way for videos is to use youtube unless you have a sophisticated hosting. The reason I suggest youtube is because the video will have no lapse versus when you host it on a $100/yearly from most hosting company.

Also, if you're advertising your products or services, it will be beneficial on youtube because 1. your prospective client can see your very next video easily 2. Your videos are exposed to millions of visitors.

    Just a suggestion.

See I guess I do not see why it has to be either...or when it comes to doing video. Why can't you mix it up. Hold back your best videos that might have a chance to be embedded for your own site to land some of the link juice. Then post other videos not just to Youtube but have it syndicated via a service like Tubemogul.com. I see video sharing sites as traffic sources but see ways video can be used to build links if the embed code points back to your site.
