    Question Link Farms

I know what a link farm is, however I am curious to what the search engines considers a link farm to be? I have seen many sites with allot of catagorialised links that have nothing to do in any remote way with the principle objective of their website. Now I'm sure a few unrelated links aren't that bad but my question is more in regards to those sites that have 300 - 1,000 or more links in this fashion.

Would a search engine when crawling this site think that it is a link farm?

    **ADDED**

Would allot of the off the wall "minor" search engines be considered as being link farms?

Could DMOZ hypothetically speaking or any other ODP be considered a link farm?

I don't know what the SEs consider a "link farm" but I do know that Google is determined to eliminate what they consider "non-natural" linking. Last month they delisted, de-indexed and outright dropped hundreds of sites. The only thing these sites appeared to have in common were directories.

The web is built on link exchange - It's not going to change in a hurry, work to the theme of your site and filled with good content. Link to sites that are relevant and you will be fine.

I don't believe anyone is questioning that the web is built on links, but there is significant doubt surrounding various type of link exchanges. Done well it will boost your ratings, done incorrectly it is at best a waste of time and if done badly and artificially, it will drag you site down. This should be obvious but somehow it eludes the majority.
