Why would someone do that? Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're asking, it seems that you'd be opening yourself up to a heap of liability by doing so.

Of course no way. We have to be wiser in that case.
If he is pushing hard against it get it in writing!! have him sign something that says you told him to do so and against your advice he is moving forward on his own. Get your broker and a lawyer to draft it - lest you get sued in 10 years out of the blue!
Why doesn't he ask the seller to pay for it in his offer? Did you explain could happen and how he could be setting himself up for a big headache later?
