    Default Google Indexing Question.

Let's say on google webmaster it states that 10,000 of the submitted urls on my sitemap are indexed by google. However, when I go to site:mydomain.com on google search, only 1/10 of that amount is listed. Which statistic is right?

    thanks in advance.

I'm not 100% sure but I would *think* that a lot of those are in the supplemental results. I've seen a lot of sites IDX listings get canned to the supp's.

The two systems use different reporting schemes. They should closely match eventually. The search results is also an approximate number of pages indexed.

That's good news! I hope it does because the search results have gone from 2000 to 600 now.

No. What is the benefit of having a xhtml sitemap?

By submitting a sitemap, you are telling google to index those pages otherwise your just relying on google to find them.

I understand that but going back to my original question, why is there a difference in the numbers of indexed on site:mydomain.com vs the google webmaster numbers.
