New guy from Florida...can someone help??

First off..hello everyone! Ok, I am currently a college student (studying to be a dentist). I have an ok job for a student, but Ive always been the type to want more...

Id like to know what steps I have to take to get into real estate. No Im not wanting it as a full-on career, but something on the side. Im 22 now, and I know if I start now, it might take a while.

What do I do? How much $$$$ do i actually need?

You posted before I could edit and PM him. I agree on most of what you are telling him, but...

The good thing is you can always use the Liscense, say you have a freind, family member, teacher whoever wanting to buy or sell a house, why not get a 3-6% or so commission. You can use your liscense and grab a commission on some property that you and your college buddies may want to pick up

This part I strongly disagree with. Why on earth would you want to do that to friends or family (grab a commission)? Don't they deserve to have someone who is knowledgeable and experienced and dedicated to real estate full time to help them make the best decision for their needs? Part timers cuase tons of havoc in our industry. My main point to him was pick one, real estate is not a part time college job. You are doing your self a dis-service by learning both at once. Someone is paying his college tuition (him or his family) and that someone deserves to have his full attention on learning dentistry.

Clemsonfan, welcome to the REW forums. I think what you are really asking is, what is required for you to sell or broker real estate in your state. Bottom line is in most states you just need to get licensed, so contact the state's department of real estate. I know, from experience, that getting licensed in California is a joke. You can do a correspondence class and take the test in about 2 weeks from the day you start the course prep. At least that is how it was when I took the exam.

I think what Matt was trying to say was that buying a home, or any real estate for that matter, is serious business. If you are planning on representing someone in the purchase of real estate (what you will be doing as an agent or broker), then it would be nice if you took it very seriously as there can be serious consequences if something is overlooked or misrepresented.

Anyway, I am not trying to disuade you here, if you want to do some deals, then go for it. Call the DRE in your state and get your license. If you are studying to become a dentist, then you are probably pretty technical and detail oriented, which will help you in real estate. Just don't let all of the details get in the way.

I am quite positive that there are many actual real estate agents who would agree that it is not a good part time college job. I've made my point, time to move on, for me anyways.

As for "newbie basher", yes I had a few words about your intro commercial, we already made up, I thought. And yes, I have an opinion about this thread too. But 16 vs. 123 posts, and I have only "bashed" (as you put it) twice. I do really have good input and 2 out of 123 isn't enough to label me. Stick around a bit and you'll see.

ANYWAYS... I checked out your friends project Moon Bahamas. It looks quite fantastic, as in science fiction. Do they have their permits or capital yet? When do they break ground? I will definately visit it when it opens. Thanks for turning us on to it.
