Default Dot call lists and realtors

If you are cold calling people for the first time, what risks do you run in terms of violating a particular states do not call legislation.

I would use a service that scrubs a data base of residents in the area you want to market in.

In addition to individual states having DNC regulations, there is also a federal DNC registry. Not sure about individual states fines, but violations of the federal DNC regulations will cost you $11k per offense. Here's a company who was recently fined.

It is primarily up to you to be in and operate in compliance, that's why it may be of benefit to use a 3rd party who's policies follow what's recommend under FTC SafeHarbor checklist:

Did some cold calling some years back when the DNC laws were first getting started. Had to manually check numbers and missed one. Easy to do, you can go blind reading numbers. Today there are companies that can set up call lists that are screened. It would be worth it. As with dealing with any state or fed agency when they think you are in the wrong, they believe they are dealing with Exxon and notify you with a fines that are many times your net worth. Yes, I talked my way out of it.

If you are only doing a few calls each evening, it is easy enough to get the lists for the area codes you are working and just check a few at a time before calling. My problem was, I would block out some time and try to develop a list for a month at a time.

Another point, everything I have ever read on cold calling, places it on the bottom of the heap for getting leads. Asking for referrals, networking are much more efficient.

You can register for your own account. 5 and less area codes are free. You can also check up to 10 #'s at a time.
The feds over-rule state do not call rules. For example in MS Real Estate Agents are considered exempt, but not federally.
