How much do you or would you pay for the someone to design a postcard or flyer for you - it would all be done via email/online.
Thank you!

Most qualified print designers are going to charge $75-100/hour. It's impossible to guess how much the design of your card would cost without knowing more about your specific needs.
My main caution would be to avoid using a designer whose primary experience is in Web design. Web and print design have very different technical requirements.

I agree with that statement
I also agree with Suz - though good designers understand both and designers with a marketing background is even better.
And the $75-$100 mark is pretty much right on. I charge $75 for anything. Typical postcard design, if content was supplied should only take an hour - MAYBE two-ish - it just depends. Flyers can range in size, as can postcards but these are usually 4x6 or 5x7.
Then you've got printing and distribution - who's supplying the mailing list, etc etc.
Unfortunately the vast majority of those who call themselves Web designers have no professional training and no marketing background whatsoever. It may be difficult for a client to tell the difference, though it's plainly and painfully obvious to a trained designer.Originally Posted by ryno
As a client, you can look for qualifications such as these:
-- a college degree in graphic design. (Be careful of degrees in "fine arts" as many fine arts degrees do not include coursework in the "applied arts" such as graphic design. Some do, but many don't.)
-- several years experience with advertising agencies
The very best designers will have, at some point in their career, the following kinds of recognition. However, once their careers are established and their talents are proven, they may no longer seek it:
-- awards from local "art directors" clubs and/or "Addy" awards from AAF, the Advertising Federation. (The majority of awards pasted on Web sites are bogus graphics handed out freely to anyone who wants one.) In fact, if a designer can tell you what an "art director" does, there's a good chance he or she is qualified, since few outside the advertising agency and professional graphic design studio worlds know what the job description means.
-- publication in highly selective trade journals such as Print Magazine or Communication Arts.

Hah - I agree.
The awards thing made me thing of this: http://37signals.com/17.html
However, that pertains to web awards, so just like you said - they're completely bogus, and some of them aren't free - it's about who pays so much for advertising they "won this award"... lol.
I can think of only one meaningful Web design award: High Five. Anyone remember that awards site? How long ago was that?Originally Posted by ryno

Guys;
Great topic. I agree with 100% of what Suz says about Web vs Print. I manage a small dept. in our brokerage that services the design needs of our 100 + agents. We are now using the Design Center ( www.imprev(.)net) IN ADDITON to our design folks to get things done.
Most REALTORs (once they find templates that they like) tend to use them over and over...
