Interesting topic. Let me admit right off that I have my fair share of these ugly suckers at the bottom of my home page. And yes, it is due to the fact that I was under the impression the backlinks would help me.

For those of us that are new to the world of SEO, can someone tell me what I can look at to see if these ugly banners are actually doing me any good?

    I'm all ears.

    Thanks, Jaffrey!

That gives me a good starting point for my "weasel search".

I have a feeling I will be removing some ugly banners soon!

I haven't seen one yet worth linking to.

i'd rather do a straight recip with a site then a webring. if i'm thinking about the same thing as you. webring as in you link with one person who links with another who links with another who links back to you??? If this is what your talking about than i would rather have straight recips with all those people then being in a ring. Plus straight recips also allow you to have more then just your anchor text. They also allow you to put relative text within a close proximity of the link which has been found to be beneficial. Also if your link gets put on a page in a state directory it is quite possible that the page will be more relevant. This is because it will have the title of the state, possibly with more text applying to your specific area on the page. Hmmmm, hope this helps.
