    Default Web Hosting

    Hello everyone!

I'm new, so bear with me.

I have a client who insists that there are only a hand full of web hosting companies you can use for Real Estate websites, because these hosting companies can handle MLS data the best.

Is this correct? We're located in Myrtle Beach, SC and my client states that SC Real Estate regulations requires web hosting by specific companies - True or False?

    Thanks for your time!

Every state is different. You might want to check into that.

As for MLS integration the two (2) standard solutions are "Framing" and "FTP Access." As for "Handling the Data" it's a non-issue with framing. With "FTP Access" you have to download the data and map it to your specs but your host wouldn't be the one who did that.

Now this interests me as we are currently working on rolling out real estate site hosting. i don't know why only a handful of companies would be able to do it. we currently have 17 clients and have had no problems with the MLS's in the different states or countries(that i am aware of and i think if we had, i would know). i would try to get a direct answer as to why only those specific ones can. it'd be interesting to know which ones they said as i know a few that do operate in that state, and i don't know how they are any different than any other webhosting company.

obviously your client got that information from somewhere, whether he got it from the right source or even interpreted it correctly is a different thing altogether. If i was you, i'd go straight to the source and find out.

seeing that you are in south carolina, i'd maybe ask bshubert on here, seeing as he runs an excellent site in south carolina and could maybe answer that for you.

FTP access is important. I know that there are some systems such as Ihouse2000 and homes.com that don't let you ftp nor do they let you modify the meta tags. It will be hard to optimize your website for the search engines and effectively get ranked.

You have to see how your MLS Listing Provider delivers the Data. Illinois (MLSNI) has two systems. They have a IDX and a VOW. We use the VOW data on www.endeavorrealty.com We download 79 thousand listing daily via their FTP site and then upload it into our SQL server. hurriKane Solutions (ME) offers hosting you can check us out at www.hurrikane.com/hosting.asp
