    Jeffrey,

Your original post suggested testing the URL at a particular site. Here is one result from a URL I tested:

    Status: HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    Date: Thu, 07 Apr 2005 01:50:48 GMT
    Server: Apache/2.0.49 (Unix) PHP/4.3.6
    X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.6
    Connection: close
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1

Could you tell me how to interpret that to spot 302 redirects?

    Thanks!

    Kathleen

    "HTTP/1.1 302 Found" is a 302 redirect.

Just out of curiosity, is there some advantage to the directory in doing 302 redirects? I wonder why they'd do something that causes problems unless there is some advantage to them??

IMO, most of the directories I've come across aren't trying to be malicious, they are just using scripts that are can cause havoc with the Search Engines. Of course, like anything else I'm sure there are a few scoundrels.

    Who is Yut?

This thread is a year and a half old and no longer valid as it looks like the Reals family of web sites no longer use the 302 redirect (at least the ones I checked today). However, it takes a database page to get deep enough into the directory where the links are visible and I'm not certain that the pages where the links are located are actually spidered, cached, indexed, or whatever. I could look it up, but I've been delaying some work already and need to get back to it.

True, Reals does have lots and LOTS and LOTS of sites (more than listed above), most doing basically the same thing. I asked about it when I met the owner about a year ago (or was it two years ago?), and this is just his business model. I assume he generates lots of advertising revenue from it.

The only part about it that I don't like is when I receive a link request from one of the sites without a disclosure that it is a Reals-related site.

Still, as a business model it works, and not everyone is going to have the same business model or agree on what is "best" (and so on).

Which brings me back to a point I've raised in the past. People who post in the directory should have to identify themselves. Not that I suspect all anonymous posters of nefarious motives, but sometimes I want to see who is posting so I can assess whether there is an agenda behind the post or not.

    To me, that makes sense.
