Here is a good article from search engine watch on the history and development of different search engines.
http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2156221 Anyone checked their ranking on lycos lately? I noticed many top 10 positions for main keywords, Wonder how they rank their results...I know lycos is powered by Ask and believe they are using Yahoo Search Technology

I don't use Lycos and never have and I know why. I just did a search and 4 of the top 10 sites had no direct relevance and should have not been in the top 10. I thought MSN search was bad, I now stand corrected, Lycos is worse. Just my 2 cents.

I don't use lycos and have rarely visited... the same goes for Ask really (despite its recent rebranding and promotion over here in the uk).
Google is where the market share of searchs is... providing over 80% of the search volumne; MSN and Yahoo bring in a tiny 6% and 7% respectively... leaving lycos, ask and the others in that tiny, tiny remaining few percent.

i think yahoo should be given a little more credit than msn, most stat reports I'm finding place google around 55-60% and yahoo around 25%, with MSN trailing around 5%
These stats also coincide with my personal stats: Nov Stat Estimates: Google: 4200 Yahoo: 2500 MSN: 750 Here are a couple recent reports, although if you look hard enough you can probably find something supporting any particular percentage http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3626020 http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2156431
