Re: Sun Buys MySQL For $1 Billion
Since 2001 MySQL has been heading down the paid road when they founded a company based around MySQL AB (specific product and service offerings under a commercial license). It immediately became profitable.
Buyers are firms like Novell, RedHat, Veritas, etc who sell and package MySQL with their own Enterprise software.
BUT, in 2004 they also changed their free version license options to the GPL open source license.
That's why the release of PHP 5 came with MySQL unbundled, after so many years of including it. PHP5 (+) comes "bundled" with SQLite.
"If your application requires MySQL to operate, AND will be released under the GPL or a GPL-compatible license, Then you're free to use MySQL Open Source License and therefore use MySQL free of charge."
Now this is all still a little hazy to us who just use it as our website databases, but the way I see it (I may be wrong) is that our Unix/Linux hosting packages come with MySQL included ... so, either the OS or the Hosting firm satisfy the license as they provide the bundled "application".
But, folks, we are talking about Billions of $$$ here, and huge profits from the enterprise version already. What is the incentive to keep developing any free version?
And let's face it, Sun is NOT a non-profit organization.
I'm curious to see how this unfolds over the next two years.
